After playing 7 matches, Hong Kong finished 29th in the tournament.

The squad

Team Hong Kong for the IQA World Cup 2025 consists of 23 quadball players who play locally in Hong Kong, as well as in Canada, the Netherlands, Poland, the United States, and the UK. This marks the largest squad we have ever sent.

Team Hong Kong is again coached by Alex LAI (#88), a Canada-based player who played for Hong Kong in the IQA World Cup 2023 and the Quadball Nations Cup II in 2024. He is assisted by Chris LAU (#26), the Co-Founder of the Hong Kong Quadball Association, who is also the team’s Manager. Jessie HO (#67) served as the Captain, and Joanne LAM (#8) served as the Vice-Captain.

Many players on Team Hong Kong have represented the team in previous international quadball tournaments, including the European Games 2020, the IQA World Cup 2023, and the Quadball Nations Cup II in 2024. They include Gordon CHOI (#4), CHENG Lik Kan (#6), TO Wing Hei (#9), CHOW Tsun Hin (#10), Michael LI (#11), Charles CHEANG (#12), Ema SHIROMA-CHAO (#14), Kimberley HUANG (#19), Nicholas FU (#25), Winco LEUNG (#29), Jong Yu CHEUNG (#44), Liona LI (#56), Timothy LUK (#65) and Queenie WONG (#99).

Five players made their debut for Team Hong Kong in this tournament. They are Thomas NG (#13), Gabriel KWOK (#17), Louisa CHENG (#18), Aidan NG (#21) and Noah LI (#54).

The jerseys and jacket

The specially designed home and away jerseys for this World Cup were created by team players Charles CHEANG and CHOW Tsun Hin, respectively. The white home jersey features red ripple patterns that symbolise Hong Kong players coming together from all over the world, united in a common goal and relentless determination.

The blue away jersey evokes Hong Kong’s historical spirit, using a sailboat motif to represent the solidarity and legendary stories under Lion Rock, transcending geographical boundaries under the same sky.

The new jacket, also a design by Charles, features the text “HONG KONG” atop a pixelated red gradient on the front, and a bauhinia and the Chinese character “魁” on the back, highlighting the team’s determination to perform well in international quadball tournaments.

Head Coach Alex LAI reflected that it is a great achievement that Hong Kong is able to play at the premier international tournament, despite being a small city. Every player approached every offence and defence with focus and determination, demonstrating the Lion Rock spirit of unity and perseverance. The team’s progress from his first coaching experience at the Quadball Nations Cup 2024 is obvious. Lai also thanked the Hong Kong fans for their support, as well as parents who travelled from as far as North America to cheer for their children, becoming the team’s strongest backbone at the World Cup.

Why are we asking for your support?
We want to ensure all players can represent Hong Kong in the IQA World Cup 2025 without facing extreme financial hardship. As HKQA has no financial support from other organisations, the cost of attending the IQA World Cup 2025 will largely fall on the players, with the estimated total cost per player being US$800 for those flying from Hong Kong. After deducting expenses, 100% of the funds raised (after deducting expenses) will go towards subsidising Team Hong Kong’s travel and tournament costs, including tournament fees, jerseys and shorts, flights, and accommodation expenses.

The Fundraiser
We are selling our brand new home and away jerseys, exclusively made for our participation in the IQA World Cup 2025. More items are coming for this fundraiser.

Official home jersey (Contribution of US$35 or more)
The official white and red home jersey of Team Hong Kong features red ripples, signifying players united as one Team Hong Kong from across the world, creating lasting ripples with their trust and determination.

Team Hong Kong participated in the Quadball Nations Cup (QNC) II from 5 to 6 October 2024 in Salou, Catalonia, Spain. The team made history by advancing to the Round of 16 after finishing second in the group stage, and obtained four wins out of eight games played overall.

Team Hong Kong wears a new kit in every tournament, and this year is no different. The new jerseys feature a whole new wave pattern. Our home jersey is in the classic white and red colour, while the away jersey is in blue and red.

The squad

The Team Hong Kong squad, consisting of Hongkongers playing quadball in Hong Kong locally, the UK, the Netherlands, the United States and Canada gathered for training and practice matches upon their arrival on 3 Oct. Unfortunately, Rachel LI (#23) suffered an injury during the pre-tournament practice session, leaving us with only 20 players to compete in the weekend.

Team Hong Kong is coached by Alex LAI (#88), a Canada-based player who played for Hong Kong in the World Cup 2023. He is assisted by Chris LAU (#26), the Co-Founder of Hong Kong Quadball Association, who is also the team’s Manager. Jessie HO (#67) served as the Captain and Thomas AU (#21) served as the Vice-Captain.

Besides Alex, Chris, and Au, Team Hong Kong includes nine other players that played for Hong Kong before. They are CHENG Lik Kan (#6), Anson LEUNG (#8), Omar HO (#9), Michael LI (#11) Charles CHEANG (#12), Kimberly HUANG (#17), TO Wing Hei (#19), Fraser POSFORD (#83) and Queenie WONG (#99).

Eight players made their debut for Team Hong Kong at QNC II, namely Toby LAU (#3), Gordon CHOI (#4), Joanne LAM (#7), Jensen LEE (#16), James YAM (#22), Joshua CHEUNG (#44), Liona LI (#56), and Jessie HO (#67).

The matches

Team Hong Kong is drawn into Group B with Austria, France, Italy and Scotland.

Day 1 (5 October)

Hong Kong first lost 70:130* to France, who eventually became first runner-up, then went on a winning streak against Austria, Scotland and Italy. With three wins in four games, Team Hong Kong finished second in the group and advanced to the Round of 16 with such brilliant results. This is the first time Team Hong Kong qualified for the championship bracket in an international tournament.

Hong Kong then faced its group stage opponent Italy again, beating it in the 13-16th place playoff, in which Hong Kong maintained advantages in the early stages of the game. Fraser POSFORD caught the flag in the 23rd minute, which won Hong Kong the game. However, Hong Kong lost the 13th Place Match against Canada by two goals and the flag score (i.e. 50 points). To round up, Hong Kong finished the second day of the tournament with one win and three losses, and ranks 14th in this Quadball Nations Cup.

Co-Founder of the Hong Kong Quadball Association, Team Manager and Assistant Coach Chris LAU said that he was pleased that Team Hong Kong sent a full roster for an international tournament for the first time in history, and the team delivered an exceptional performance in historically advancing to the knockout stage, securing four victories against European teams, even successfully preventing Austria and Scotland from scoring a single goal before the flag (snitch) is released. He hopes the team can achieve even better results in the International Quadball Association World Cup next year.

The Bauhinia Challenge is the first international quadball match in Hong Kong since the exhibition match organised by the “Fly for Equality” Project in January 2018, which was played between HKU (the University of Hong Kong) and Seoul Puffskeins from South Korea. It is also the first time a quadball team from Japan visits Hong Kong.

Katayaburi was the third-best team in the Asian-Pacific Quadball Cup 2022. A total of 10 Katayaburi players travelled to Hong Kong for the match, including Naoki UESAKA, Shogo HASHIMOTO, Mayu NAGAYAMA, Natsuko SUZUKI, Tanvi PATIL, Taiki IDE, Genta SEKINE, Akari OTSUKA, Hidekazu KATO, and their captain, Ryochi ISHIKIRIYAMA.

Players from the other two teams include:

Hongkong Hydras QC: Toby LAU TIng Fung (#3), Jay HOLMES (#10), Gigi LAM (#22), Rachel LI Hiu Ching (#23), Rebecca WANG (#42), Thomas PICKERING (#44), Martin LAW (#44) (did not play), Kait MACDONALD (#67)

Victorian Dragons: Tsz Fung TAI (#6), Yoyo KU (#11), Thomas AU (#21), James YAM (#22), Chris LAU (#26), Peony LAU (#38), Aakash SRINIVASAN (#41), Queenie WONG (#99)

Bauhinia Challenge started with the Preliminary Round, in which Katayaburi played Hongkong Hydras QC and Victorian Dragons in two matches. The match winner will be awarded three points, and the Champion of the Hong Kong Quadball Cup 2023, a local tournament held in the morning on the same day, has three points. Among the three teams, the two teams with the most points advance to the Final.

Katayaburi beat Hongkong Hydras QC with a score of 230*-30 in the first match of the Preliminary Round, then went on to beat Victorian Dragons with a score of 160*-80 in the second match. After the Preliminary Round, Katayaburi has 6 points, Victorian Dragons has three, and Hongkong Hydras QC has none. Katayaburi and Victorian Dragons thus advanced to the Final. Katayaburi defeated Victorian Dragons in the final with a score of 130*-20. Impressively, Katayaburi won all three matches and caught the snitch in each of them, becoming the Champion of the Bauhinia Challenge. You can now revisit these games on our Association’s YouTube channel!

Katayaburi’s key player Naoki UESAKA, who would go on to represent Japan in the 2023 World Cup after the Bauhinia Challenge, expressed excitement about winning the tournament in Hong Kong, saying the day “is definitely the best moment of my quidditch life”. The captain of Victorian Dragons Queenie WONG, who would go on to represent Hong Kong in the 2023 World Cup, said it was an honour to play with one of the best teams from Asia.

Unfortunately, this is the last quadball tournament played by Thomas PICKERING, who sadly passed away in November 2023 in an accident. Our Association completes this late tournament report with him in mind.

After playing 5 matches, Hong Kong finished with our best final ranking in the World Cup - 13th (with Austria and Norway).

This World Cup was originally scheduled in 2020, but unfortunately it was postponed due to the pandemic. Hong Kong’s original 2020 squad consisted of 25 players, but unfortunately things changed after a three-year delay. Still, the 15-player Team Hong Kong did its best in Richmond this year.

Team Hong Kong’s kits are once again designed by Hongkongese quadball player Charles CHEANG. The jerseys feature a whole new wave pattern, symbolising Hong Kong’s famous Victorian Harbour, and the iconic skyline of Hong Kong. Our home jersey is in the classic white and red colour, while the away jersey is in black and red this time.

The squad

To everyone’s disappointment, Jessie HO, an avid Hong Kong-based quadball player who was originally named captain of Team Hong Kong, could not travel to the USA due to visa issues. This meant that Hong Kong only had a small squad of 15 players to start with. Unfortunately, Garbo CHENG YE injured himself in our pre-tournament practice session with Australia, leaving us with only 14 players for the World Cup.

Team Hong Kong is once again coached by Fraser POSFORD (#83), a Hong Kong-born experienced quadball player, who also served as the team’s Captain and played in all five of our matches. Chris LAU (#26), the Co-Founder of Hong Kong Quadball Association, again served as the team’s Manager, and this time also as a Vice-Captain. Ema SHIROMA-CHAO (#14), a Canada-based player who first played for Hong Kong in 2018, also served as a Vice-Captain. Fraser, Chris, and UK-based Hongkonger Timothy LUK (#65) both played for Hong Kong in the World Cup 2018 and European Games 2022.

Two players who played their first quadball tournament in the European Games for Hong Kong, TO Wing Hei (#19) and Nicholas FU (#25), are also in the squad. TO Wing Hei is now a chaser playing for the London-based club “Phoenix QC Clapham”, while Nicholas FU is a chaser playing in Tokyo, for the newly-established team “Iron Horse”.

Team Hong Kong also includes several experienced players based in the North America, including two players who play in the Major League Quadball, Michael LI (#11) and Timothy KWAN (#8), and other also experienced players: Jessalynn TSANG (#0), Kimberly HUANG (#17), Alec WEBBER (#54), and Alex LAI (#88).

Besides Chris, other Team Hong Kong players who played in the tournaments held in Hong Kong in April this year are Rachel LI (#23) and Queenie WONG (#99).

The matches

We have been drawn into a group with African nations, Belgium, United States and Norway and played a single round-robin of matches with these teams on the first day of the World Cup.

In the first match, Hong Kong lost to African Nations by just 80 to 110, with Team Hong Kong top goalscorer Michael LI, Captain and Head Coach Fraser POSFORD and player Nicholas FU on the scoresheet and Chris LAU catching the snitch.

Hong Kong faced tough opponents afterwards, namely Belgium (which came third eventually), USA (which became Champion eventually), and Norway (third runner-up of the European Games 2022), losing by 40 to 160, 10 to 220 and 80 to 260 respectively. Remarkably, Michael LI scored a goal against the World Champions USA!

On the second day, Team Hong Kong faced Brazil, the reigning IQA Pan-American Games Champion, in the place playoff. Although the match was once suspended due to heavy rain and lightning, Hong Kong never gave up and played a close match with Brazil. Unfortunately, Brazil caught the snitch at the last moment, defeating Hong Kong by 210 to 160. Although Team Hong Kong failed to secure a win, it obtained its highest ranking in the IQA World Cup.

Fraser POSFORD, Captain and Head Coach of Team Hong Kong, says, “Coming into the tournament, we knew how challenging it would be for Hong Kong to compete at the World Cup given the high standard of our opposition and Hong Kong being the team with the smallest roster at the tournament. However, Hong Kong scored in every single match, including against the eventual champions the USA and Bronze medalists Belgium, and we also caught the flag against African Nations. I would say the highlight of our tournament was the close match with Brazil. It’s by far the strangest match I’ve ever played in my Quadball career with play starting in torrential rain before a storm delay and finishing in scorching summer heat. The skill and experience of Hong Kong’s players allowed us to play an incredible match in which we were only one small step away from victory. Personally, I’m really pleased with the effort and the passion that the players showed throughout the tournament. I hope that we can help inspire the growth of quadball in Hong Kong and across Asia. This is a sport that’s built for everyone to play and participate in both on and off the pitch and I look forward to seeing more Hongkongers get involved in the future of quadball.”

Chris LAU, Vice-Captain and Manager of Team Hong Kong, says, “I am very honoured to be able to catch the snitch in the Quadball World Cup. I am also very satisfied with the performance of all the players. Although Team Hong Kong failed to secure a win, we showed our spirit of never-giving-up even when facing the strongest opponents.”

Nicholas FU, the player who scored a goal and is now playing for a quadball club in Tokyo, says, “I am very glad to have scored my first goal for Hong Kong, which was what I aimed for before the World Cup. I practised repeatedly the shooting movements and skills for the tournament during our practices, and my goal proved that my hard work paid off. It is a pity that we failed to secure a win and I hope that my next goal will bring Hong Kong victory.”

Victorian Dragons won the first-ever Hong Kong Quadball Cup

On 29 April 2023, our Association organised the first-ever Hong Kong Quadball Cup, with two participating teams, the Hongkong Hydras Quidditch Club and Victorian Dragons.
